Kate Mearns has been involved in the wellness industry for over twenty years. Since that time, she has worked in various sectors of the wellness business. Beginning her career at Coolfont Resort in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia she studied to become a Certified Personal Trainer and Aerobics Instructor and spent a great deal of time working directly with guests of the resort. She credits Martha Ashelman, one of the founders of the International Spa Association (ISPA), as her mentor who encouraged her to become involved in the spa business. Coolfont Resort was one of this country’s first true destination spas. Guests would attend weeklong programs in a rustic and natural setting in the mountains of West Virginia to learn how to live healthier lifestyles. After transitioning to a leadership role at the resort, Mearns created additional wellness programs and expanded the offerings of spa services.
Mearns moved with her family to Williamsburg, Virginia to open the first resort spa for Anheuser-Busch at Kingsmill Resort. She successfully managed one of the most profitable departments of the resort and assisted with several expansions of the spa facilities. Additionally, she oversaw the fitness, fitness membership and children’s activities for the property.
Mearns joined WTS, International in 2006 to guide the opening and consequent management for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s spa. Her responsibilities included oversight of the spa, salon, fitness center, wellness memberships, aquatics, and recreational activities. Mearns delivered especially strong financial performance, assisted in capital and strategic planning, and achieved excellent guest service scores, resulting in Colonial Williamsburg’s achieving a Forbes 4-Star rating (the first 4-Star spa in Virginia).
Mearns became a member of WTS, International Corporate Operations Team in September of 2014 and focused her efforts on conducting spa audits, feasibility studies, attending conferences, presenting on behalf of WTS at trade events, while managing major accounts across the country. She was also involved with many of WTS strategic initiatives.
Mearns has also contributed to the global spa industry through her association with the International Spa Association (ISPA); on the Board of Directors for 5 years including two years as Chairman). In her role, Mearns travelled extensively speaking on behalf of the industry and meeting spa owners and spa vendors to strengthen the association in order to better serve its constituents.
As a result of her involvement with ISPA and her management successes, Mearns has had many opportunities to represent the spa industry. She’s been featured on the Travel Channel, spoken on spa trends and research in international locales such as Bangkok, Paris, Mexico, Singapore, and Dubai and has written numerous articles for spa and fitness industry publications. Mearns lives in Williamsburg, Virginia with her husband. She has five active children; 3 working professionally and two still in college, and in her rare spare time enjoys traveling, trekking and running.
